MARGAO: Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders Jorson Fernandes and Kiran Kandolkar severely rebuke the Chief Minster Dr Pramod Sawant-government on its failure on waste management protocols in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate.
Addressing the media, Fernandes also said that in the absence of any proper hazardous waste regulatory or disposal systems, the people of Cuncolim have been on the receiving end.
As has been pointed out repeatedly by the Cuncolim Citizens Action Front, tons of hazardous waste consisting of untreated heavy metals like Lead, Chromium, Cadmium and Zinc have been lying around covered by a mere tarpaulin sheet, posing a serious health risk.
Lashing out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government for their failure to address this crucial issue, Fernandes said the Goa State Pollution Control Board has been a silent spectator as usual, and should rather be called the Pollution Causing Board.’
The Nicomet factory, which was shut down after dumping thousands of tonnes of chemical waste, has now been taken over by Vedanta Company. Fernandes and TMC have warned the latter and other government officials not to start the factory without disposing off the hazardous waste.
"Despite authorities being reminded year after year, no action has been taken on the same. Furthermore, a court order instructing that the waste be treated and stored in a captive landfill site has also been ignored,” said Fernandes.
Citing several other lapses, Fernandes pointed out that Joaquim Alemao of Congress, Rajan Naik of BJP and INC defector Clafasio had all treated the issue with total disregard, and left the people of Cuncolim in the lurch.
Kandolkar appealed Cuncolkars to keep the legacy of their freedom fighters have sacrificed their life for freedom and fought against injustice. He said that the people should send those politicians home those responsible for bringing polluting factories in Cuncolim. “Cuncolkars need leader like Fernandes who is working for public health and environmental protection,” said Kandolkar
