Sammy Tavares: A cop looking out for his Goa
A new song by the singing SP Sammy Tavares highlighting the cutting of the hill that is taking place in Panzorconne, Cuncolim and the troubling silence of the political class
Laws being flouted fragrantly should not surprise anyone in Goa. There was a great deal of attention paid to the flouting of environmental laws in Old Goa. An illegal structure was constructed on a world heritage site and was still standing. Now a senior police officer SP Sammy Tavares has composed a song on the hill cutting that has been taking place in Panzorconne –Cuncolim area. Titled “Maink Vikunk Sodtat”, it has been released even as a hearing on a show cause notice cum stop work order was taking place.
The powers that be have been slammed for turning a blind eye to the developments that have been taking place at the base of the hillocks. This it seems is being done for a housing project. The song which was released on Independence Day has questioned the silence of the politicians and the authorities since the development was taking place right adjoining the national highway.
The senior cop said the song sought to convey the message to the authorities that they could not afford to be naive to the sentiments of the people in the area. He said Cuncolim was not for sale and neither was its natural beauty and heritage.
In the song Sammy points out that illegal vote banks was destroying the environment. This had led to the silence of the politicians and the activists which was apparent in the case of the cutting of the hill that was taking place in Panzorconne Cuncolim. He points out that it was important for everyone to protect their motherland which was Goa. Goa, he said was filled with a different culture and everyone was united. He ended by singing that the fight to save the environment was important because of all the illegalities. This fight was important if everyone wanted a better tomorrow.
This is yet another song by a man who has created a niche for himself in the business. One can only hope this song catches the attention of everyone in the state because it is very obvious that the magic and beauty that makes Goa unique is being stripped away in a planned manner.
