Hockey in cold storage in Cuncolim needs helping hand of well wishers

Hockey – the national game of India – is in cold storage in Cuncolim. From 2018 the game has moved away from the sporting radar of Cuncolim. The boys and girls of Cuncolim are in agony, running from pillar to post to bring the game back on to the surface. Who is or are the Good Samaritan/s who can bring it back on track. Are there any in Cuncolim?

  • There are a few….my thoughts go to coach Glestone Fernandes of Demani Cuncolim, a hockey coach and Neeraj Aguair, office bearer of Our Lady of Health High School Cuncolim, the Diocesan Society school and not to forget Suraj Ambe, President of Cuncolim Union.

Glestone is not new to hockey in Cuncolim he was the force behind Cuncolim Hockey Club. The boys and girls of Our Lady of Health and Maria Bambina Convent Cuncolim trained on the tarred surface outside the Cuncolim Government School play ground for four years from 2014 to 2018.

Glestone has had accompanied the Goa hockey team as an official in the past and also had a firsthand knowledge of the talent and potential of the girls he was training for, but the hockey youth development programmed in Cuncolim got derailed. Who derailed, why it was derailed, we will not deliberate but we will make sure the same mistakes are not repeated.

“All the boys and girls are eager to come back and play hockey, whenever I meet them they ask me, Sir, when are we going to start our hockey,” said Glestone.

The girls have since passed out from school and now are either in Higher Secondary are in College but are missing their hockey trainings,” added Glestone.

Glestone, a ex-Monte de Guirim, who shifted from Grade 8 to Mumbai, said Cuncolim Hockey Club did not receive any fundings from the schools, Goans Hockey or Sports Authority of Goa or the Goa government.

“Cuncolim Hockey Club was all about funding from the local well wishers and some of own members pitching with a limited money. The girls and boys use to buy their own sticks while the rest of the equipment we did manage to get from the small donations we got my local well wishers,” said Glestone.

Asked about the possibility of getting hockey back with the help of Ex-students of Our Lady of Health and using Cuncolim Union Sports Complex’s basketball court as a training ground, Glestone was for it.

“Yes, we can certainly do it with Our lady of Health HS Cuncolim ex-student association, they have quite an active association and have done a number of programmes and activities for sports and hockey can very well fit into their schemes of things,” Glestone.

Neeraj when contacted said;”A few officials have contacted me on the proposal but we need to have concrete plan so that we can discuss it with our office bearers and set the ball in motion.”

Suraj Ambe was also open about the Cuncolim Union facilities being used for hockey practice.

“We are open to handing over the basketball court for hockey training, let the proposal come to us and we will discuss and get back, together we need to promote sports and give our boys and girls platform to excel and shine,” said Suraj Ambe.

“We have contacted Suraj Ambe and had talks with him on using the basketball court, let’s see how the plan moves forward. We are looking for technical, financial and equipment support from various quarters not just from Cuncolim and we are ready to reach out to people from outside the state, country who are hockey lovers and who want to promote the game in Goa,” added a sports promoter, who is working behind the curtains to see that the hockey game is back on track in Cuncolim.

So, it is now time to groom new leaders in hockey, not just young hockey players.

Training young boys abnd girls to be coaches, umpires, officials and other key off the field officials. So it upon Goan hockey officials President Farrel Furtado who happens to be a teacher at Maria Bambina convent Cuncolim to groom and train the next generation hockey officials, coaches and players from her own backyard.

The hockey movement has to spread and it no point holding on the reigns of Goan hockey when hockey action has come to a standstill in your backyard.

It is time for Farrel to step out of the classroom and to be on the playfield. It is time to move from the cozy comforts to seating on the hockey turf and set the hockey ball rolling. Can she do it in Cuncolim only time will tell.
