Cuncolim's pride Sammy Tavares dazzles on Tiatr stage

What happens when a high ranking senior Police Officer an epitome of honesty and uprightness decides to take a short break from his hectic and stress full round the clock duty schedule and indulges in his passionate hobby of writing song lyrics and launches a Konkani video album? Undoubtedly, the news makes headlines and eventually becomes the talk of town.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Sammy Tavares presently SDPO at the Mapusa town Police Station did just that. His first ever Konkani VCD/DVD album appropriately entitled ‘Police Porjek’ containing 9 songs and jokes is scheduled for release on 16th October 2010. The album will be simultaneously released in Goa, Gulf States, Swindon & Wembley in the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Paris & USA. This is a unique record for him and for the entire Police department, for being the first senior Police Officer to bring out a Konkani music album. It’s a hot topic of discussion among the Konkani music fraternity and music lovers.

Many may not know, but Sammy comes from a family of tiatr and music lovers. As a young boy with an impressionable mind he grew up seeing his beloved father the late Theodosio Tavares and two of his paternal uncles late Teotoliano Tavares and late Michael Tavares closely associated with tiatrs in his village of Cuncolim. His father was a well know lyricist at that time and he would stage tiarts for village feasts etc. His brothers Flony and Max both of whom passed away at young age were also ardent tiatr lovers and promoters.

With such strong backing from his family members, it was natural for young Sammy to get closely involved in tiatrs from young. He has so far penned 3 tiatrs viz., ‘Koddu Somdir, Dazlina, and Ugddas’. These tiatrs were directed and staged by him at the village level. However, when Sammy joined the Police Force, he had to go slow on his creative pursuits and concentrate on more serious matters.

Speaking about his first Konknai Music album ‘Police Porjek’ Sammy said “It took me around 45 days to compose the lyrics for this album at one go. I was on a few days leave and so I could concentrate on this creative venture. The album contains 9 songs inclusive of one duet and 8 solos. I have also roped in Goa’s sensation Sonia Shirsat to render a solo in the album. The 9 songs have nine different themes and the title song ‘Police Porjek’ is dedicated to the men in uniform and their families who laid down their lives in the line of duty. The song is rendered by me.’

Throwing more light on the title song he says, ‘it was inspired after the 26/11 Mumbai Taj terror attack and its consequential fall out on Goan security scenario during the Christmas and New celebrations. Despite the negative image that the Police have to endure, not all are rotten apples. It is the Policemen who risk their limbs and lives to safeguard the lives of ordinary citizens. They sacrifice just about everything from social life to family life to be there in the thick of action at anytime of the day or night. The title song is my humble tribute to men in uniform’.

Besides Sonia Shirsat, the other singers in the album are; Aniceto Lawrenco, Lawrie Travasso, Xavier Gomes, Jessica Vaz, and Gulab best singer 2009 award winner Roma. The music is by Norman Cardozo together with Agnelo Dias and the videography is handled by Joywin Fernandes and the album is recorded at Audio Masters, by Aurville Rodrigues. Sammy Tavares has handpicked some topmost comedians of the Konkani stage to render the jokes in the VCD and they are; Comedian Agostinho, Comedian Selvy, and Comedian Janet. Versatile Mathew Araujo also finds a place in the album. The album is produced by Francis Coutinho under the banner of Nevia Productions.

The video is shot at outdoor as well as indoor locations in and around Goa and the nine tracks in the album are as follows: ‘Gopantlim Uddonakat’ by Aniceto Laurence, ‘Poilo Kommunianv’ by Sonia Shirsat, ‘Kunkollkar’ a tribute to his village by Sammy Tavares, ‘Porot Ghora vor’ by Xavier Gomes, ‘London Soddun Yo’ by Jessica Vaz, ‘Bapaik Nomoskar by Laurie Travasso, ‘Tarvotteank Rakh by Roma, ‘Ghovachea ghorant mor’ a duet by Jessica & Aniceto and ‘Police Porjek’ a tribute by Sammy Tavares. There are four jokes sequences in between the tracks.

Dy SP Sammy Tavares is grateful to his Director General of Police, Bhim Sen Bassi for his encouragement, support and approval in allowing him to fulfill his desire in producing a music album. The count down has begun for the release which will take place at his village in Cuncolim on 16th Oct two days before the famous Colva Fama. Knowing the caliber of Dy. SP Sammy Tavares, as an efficient and no-nonsense Police Officer, one has no doubt that his music album too will set a new benchmark for quality productions.
