ANTHEM FOR COPS SAMMY TAVARES

Friday, 15 October 2010

PANJIM: When DySP Sammy Tavares wrote a song on the police, he merely wanted to express himself through music and enlighten people about a cop's life. The department, however, wants to make this song work for them. After listening to it, Goa Police permitted the DySP to release a CD with the police song hoping it would help them connect with a larger number of people. Sammy Tavares"At times certain messages given from the official platform have a lesser impact because of the 'us versus them' feeling. Tavares' articulation of the basic ethos with which Goa police essentially functions will reduce the gap betwe

en 'us and them' and bring home the sentiments expressed in a more acceptable form. We are happy that Tavares has used his innate talent to educate people about their safety and security and the efforts made by the police on the street," DGP Bhimsen Bassi said. Tavares has now produced a music video — Police Porjek (police for the people) — comprising nine Konkani songs and comedy sequences in which he sings and also acts. The DySP, who is not a trained singer, explains that he loves the uniform and it was natural for him to combine this with his passion for writing songs and pen one on

the police. "It is something I feel strongly about. I decided to sing the song because I felt that I can express the emotions, aspirations, commitment and destiny of a policeman whose primary job is to serve the people and country in a much better way than anyone else," Tavares said. SP (North) Arvind Gawas said, "Through the song, DySP Tavares reassures the people about a policeman's commitment to the safety and security of the state, even at the risk of his life. His appeal to the public to support the police will help take the Goa police message of serving the people selflessly to a larger audience." (TOI)
